The season marks the debut of Arnold Schwarzenegger—actor and former Governor of California, as host. The show's former host, Donald Trump, stated he opted to leave "out of respect" while he was focusing on his presidential campaign. NBC had also begun to cut ties with Trump following controversial remarks he made upon the start of his campaign in 2015. Trump remains as an executive producer through the show's production company, MGM Television. NBC announced the 16 contestants, as well as advisors Warren Buffett, Tyra Banks, Steve Ballmer, Jessica Alba and Patrick M. Knapp Schwarzenegger on January 28, 2016. On December 1, 2016, six more advisors were announced. Those advisers are former Celebrity Apprentice winner Leeza Gibbons, celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito, Extra co-host Tracey Edmonds, The Biggest Loser host Bob Harper, YouTube star iJustine, and "Moola" CEO Gemma Godfrey. This season will be filmed in Los Angeles. Aside from the host and location, the most notable change from previous seasons is that the catch phrase that accompanies a candidate's termination has been changed from "You're fired" to "You're terminated", a reference to one of Schwarzenegger's most famous film roles.

The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition is a reality television program that premiered in Asia on 18 March 2021 and will air worldwide from June 2021. Unlike The Apprentice Asia, it is a new global edition co-owned by MGM and ONE Championship. The show features 16 candidates from around the world competing in both business and physical challenges. The winner will receive a US$250,000 job offer to work directly under ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong for a year as his protégé (and as a member of Chief of Staff) in Singapore. CEOs from major companies and prominent mixed martial artists will also guest star on the show.

Sixteen candidates, all affected by the economic crisis, arrive in New York City for a 13-week job interview with Donald Trump. Trump divides them into teams and tasks them with creating a modern workspace. A fight breaks out on one team, and on the other side, the leadership abilities of the Project Manager are called into question. During the presentation, an office hazard leads to an accident, putting one team's fate in jeopardy. In the end, one team pulls out a win, and a candidate on the losing side becomes the first to hear Trump's fateful words: "You're Fired!"
